Preparing the feed
Whilst this powder product is made under strict hygienic conditions, it is not sterile. Failure to follow instructions on preparation and storage may make your baby ill. Liquid formats are sterile and ready to use.
Preparing powder 900 g format ONLY:
Easy to use: peel foil seal, lift and pull the tab to open and use the handy built-in levelling bar for easy scooping

1. Wash hands well. Sterilise all utensils according to manufacturers' instructions.
2. Boil kettle filled with fresh tap water. Allow boiled water to cool for no more than 30 minutes before measuring the required amount of water (see feeding guide) into the sterilised bottle, carefully - the water is hot. Do not use artificially softened water or repeatedly boiled water.
3. Using the scoop provided in the can, add the correct number of scoops of powder (see feeding guide), levelling off each scoop with the handy built-in leveller in the can. Replace plastic lid on can.
4. Place the sterilised teat and cap on the bottle and shake well. Cool bottle under cold running water until lukewarm. Test temperature by shaking a few drops onto the inside of your wrist

Preparing powder format 450 g:

3. Using the scoop provided in the can, add the correct number of scoops of powder (see feeding guide), levelling off each scoop with the back of a clean dry knife. Replace plastic lid on can. 4. Place the sterilised teat and cap on the bottle and shake well. Cool bottle under cold running water until lukewarm. Test temperature by shaking a few drops onto the inside of your wrist

Preparing liquid formats:

1. SMA First Infant Milk can be fed at room temperature. If required to heat, stand the unopened bottle in warm water (not boiling). Do not remove the feeding measure tear strip until milk has been warmed to desired temperature.
2.Wash hands well. Peel off the tear strip on the side of the bottle to reveal the feeding measure. This will help show you how much your baby has consumed. Shake bottle, unscrew lid from the bottle and remove the foil seal.
3.Unwrap SMA ready to use pre-sterilised teat and holding the teat ring, screw directly onto the bottle.
4. Gently press down the neck of the bottle to angle it for easier feeding. If warmed, test temperature by shaking a few drops of milk onto the inside of your wrist, milk should be lukewarm.
Decanting from the SMA bottle:1 If milk is to be decanted, sterilise all utensils according to manufacturers' instructions. If required to heat, stand your filled bottle in warm water. 2 If warmed test temperature by shaking a few drops of milk onto the inside of your wrist, milk should be lukewarm.
Storage of milk: If fed directly from the bottle dispose of leftover feed that has not been used within 2 hours. If milk is decanted the remaining contents of the bottle can be resealed and stored in the fridge for up to 24 hours for the 250ml bottle and up to 48 hours for the 1 litre bottle. If resealing the bottle make sure the foil is completely removed before screwing on the lid.
