What is SMA Staydown*?”

All babies are sometimes a little bit sick after feeding; this is known as reflux, possetting or regurgitation. But some babies bring back a little bit more milk than others or do it more often than others. This is known as significant reflux. SMA Staydown is a casein-based milk that has been specially developed to help ensure the milk stays in your baby’s tummy so it can be properly digested.

“When should I use SMA Staydown?”

SMA Staydown is an infant milk which is gentle enough to be used from birth and is nutritionally complete for the first six months.

If your baby regularly brings back small amounts of her milk, don’t worry – it’s something babies do. However, if you think your baby is bringing back too much milk, mention this to your GP or other healthcare professional, who will be able to advise you on whether you should change to SMA Staydown.

SMA Staydown can be used until your baby is twelve months of age and can also complement weaning. However, all babies are different and you may find that the reflux stops around the time of weaning. In this case, you can switch back to an infant milk, such as SMA Gold*, or, if your baby is over six months, you may wish to choose SMA Progress*, which is specially formulated for older babies and toddlers.

“What are the benefits of using SMA Staydown?”

SMA Staydown contains a pre-cooked natural corn (maize) starch which helps it stay in your baby’s tummy more easily. SMA Staydown has a normal consistency in the bottle and will flow through a standard teat.

“Which formats are available?”

SMA Staydown is available on prescription from your GP and is also available over the counter in most high street pharmacies.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:  Breast feeding is best for babies.  You should always seek the advice of a doctor, midwife, health visitor, public health nurse, dietitian or pharmacist on the need for and proper method of use of infant formulae and on all matters of infant feeding. SMA infant formulae are intended to replace breast milk when mothers do not breast feed.   Good maternal nutrition is important for the preparation and maintenance of breast feeding. Introducing partial bottle feeding may have a negative effect on breast feeding and reversing a decision not to breast feed is difficult.   Infant formulae should always be prepared and used as directed.  Unnecessary or improper use of infant formula may present a health hazard.  Social and financial implications should be considered when selecting a method of infant feeding. Pre-thickened infant formulae are intended to replace breast milk when mothers do not breast feed and when significant reflux (regurgitation) is a problem. If the baby’s reflux does not improve within 2 weeks of starting use of a pre-thickened infant formula, or if the infant fails to thrive, the family doctor should be consulted.
