SMA LF formula is nutritionally complete for up to 6 months of age, so your baby will receive all the nutrients needed for healthy growth and development – only without the lactose which may be upsetting their tummy. SMA LF is also suitable for older infants & young children, in conjunction with solid food, up to 18 months of age. SMA LF tastes the same as other SMA infant milks, so your baby shouldn’t notice a difference when you switch back to their usual infant milk e.g. SMA First Infant Milk (formerly SMA Gold).

SMA LF is suitable for both Halal and Vegetarian diets.

What is Lactose Intolerance?

Lactose intolerance (which is usually a temporary problem) is due to the absence or reduction of the digestive enzyme lactase

• Lactose intolerance is often secondary to gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and bowel) and is implicated in colic

• Less common in breastfed babies

• Causes abdominal pain, wind, loose stools and poor weight gain or weight loss

• Lasts for a few days or up to a few weeks

When should SMA LF (Lactose Free Formula) be used?

For those babies with proven lactose intolerance. It is suitable to use from birth.  Please consult your Health Care Professional if you think you baby might be lactose intolerant. If your baby is weaning, you should still contact your healthcare professional and they will be able to give you advice on having a lactose free diet.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Breast milk is best for babies. This product must be used under medical supervision. SMA LF is a lactose free milk based formula for the dietary management of babies and young children who are intolerant to lactose or sucrose, or who are suffering from symptoms such as diarrhoea, tummy ache or wind caused by temporary lactose intolerance.  It is suitable as the sole source of nutrition for babies up to 6 months of age, and in conjunction with solid food, for babies and young children up to 18 months of age. Professional advice must be followed on the need for and proper use of formulae and on all matters of infant feeding. SMA LF is not suitable for those who are allergic to cows’ milk protein, or who suffer from galactosaemia or require a galactose free diet.
