what to expect in the first trimester

First Trimester (1-11 weeks)

What's happening ?

Mum

  • Missed period
  • Symptoms of early pregnancy, such as morning sickness, tender breasts, cravings, tiredness and tears.
  • Pregnancy confirmed by your GP so you can be ‘booked in’ for antenatal care.
  • By the end of the first trimester, you might be able to make out the outline of your bump.

Baby

  • Your baby starts off as a single cell but after only 12 weeks, your baby’s organs have formed, his body has developed arms, legs and tiny fingers and his face is taking shape.
  • There will be movement around in your womb, although your baby is still too small for you to feel anything.
  • By the end of the first trimester of pregnancy, he is 7 cm long.

Dad

  • Be understanding – about everything!
