What is preterm and low birthweight?

In the UK, around 50,000 infants are born preterm each year.

Preterm is defined as infants born at or before 37 weeks of pregnancy.

Infants who are born prematurely weigh much less than term infants and fall into one of the categories below.  This is because a significant amount of the baby’s weight gain occurs between 36 and 40 weeks.

When should SMA Gold Prem 2 be used?

On the advice of your healthcare professional on discharge from hospital. 

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Breast milk is best for babies. This product must be used under medical supervision. SMA Gold Prem 2 catch-up formula is a special formula for preterm and low birthweight babies who are not solely fed breast milk. It is a nutritionally complete formula for use on discharge from hospital or when a low birthweight formula is no longer appropriate. It is suitable for use as the sole source of nutrition for babies up to 6 months. Professional advice must be followed on the need for and proper method of use of SMA Gold Prem 2 and on all matters of infant feeding. SMA Gold Prem 2 is not intended for use with newborn preterm babies, for whom fortified breast milk or a low birthweight formula such as SMA Gold Prem 1 is more appropriate.
